Google Bombing Explained - Released
Nov 5, 2006
ATLANTA (November 3, 2006) – With mid-term elections looming ahead, some politicians are getting skewered in the search engines through a technique that is much hyped and talked about as of late: Google bombing. Although Google bombing does not offer much to be applauded in the best practices arena, it does pose serious questions and concerns among those who recognize its origins and purposes. With the advent of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and its subsequent advantages to anyone with a website and desire to get noticed by the Internet-roaming masses, Google bombing has become a hot topic.
In his article “Google Bombing Explained,” NeboWeb CEO Brian Easter explains the definition, relevance and practice of Google bombing in the corporate world and in politics. The piece details the difference between ethical search engine visibility, notably through accurate anchor text and link building strategies, versus sabotaging a website’s visibility through Google bombing.
Despite the millions of dollars spent on advertising on both national and local elections, many politicians don’t reap the benefits of search engine results for a host of hot button political keywords that drive tremendous traffic through major search engines like Google and Yahoo! However, many campaigns are starting to focus on the negative impact Google bombing can have on their political opponents.
A well-known example of this is the undesired results the White House (www.whitehouse.gov) gets when you type in “miserable failure” in Google, providing a number one listing to the White House’s bio for George W. Bush. Instead of attempting to raise the rankings of one’s organizational website, most often political Google bombing’s objectives are to tie a political opponent’s website to negative terms like the “miserable failure” example above with George W. Bush. As we speak, Ned Lamont’s team is rumored to be waging a heavy Google bombing campaign against Joe Lieberman in the hotly contested Connecticut Senatorial race. According to a recent New York Times article, there is a significant campaign underway to attack 50 or so Republican candidates.
Search Engine Optimization has the potential to impact elections given that there were over 5.6 billion searches in July 2006 alone. These SEO campaigns try to improve the chance that a website will show up in the search engines when someone types in a particular keyword. For example, likely 2008 presidential candidates like Hillary Clinton or John McCain could garner a significant amount of Web traffic and pre-positioning if their websites were ranked for a whole host of key phrases like “national security,” “Iraq war” and “war on terror,” to name a few . Below are some keywords and their estimated searches per month which further demonstrates the potential power that Google, Yahoo!, and MSN have to impact an election:
| Term | July 2006 Estimated Searches |
| Iraq | 393,967 |
| Iran | 418,277 |
| Osama Bin Laden | 31,083 |
| North Korea | 278,444 |
| Immigration | 233,126 |
| National Security | 11,330 |
| Environment | 63,706 |
| Gay Marriage | 29,034 |
